Foundation Pieced Key Fob

Monday, 3rd February 2025 - Introduction to Foundation Paper Piecing by Carol Yapp

General equipment
  • Sewing machine, plus foot pedal & power cord (we've all forgotten one of these!)
  • Open toe foot for your machine so you can see where you are sewing.
  • Small cutting mat
  • Small quilting ruler 6 - 12 inches long by 1 - 6 inches wide max or a 6x6", square - you just don't want to manhandle a 24" ruler.  We can share.
  • Add a quarter or add an eighth ruler (only if you have one. They are yellow or green and have a ridge; FPP is what they are designed for)
  • Rotary cutter
  • Seam roller (only if you have one, fingers also work)
  • Fine patchwork pins can be helpful
  • Seam ripper (essential... need I say more)
  • Polyfill and/or walnut shells to stuff your pincushion with.
  • Decobob 80wt thread by Wonderfil is recommended for small FPP piecing,  You can use Aurifil but NO monofilament.
  • 70/10 or 80/12 Microtex needle (70/10 is recommended for this project) or a 75 /11 quilting needle (you want a sharp pointed needle).
  • Iron and ironing mat
  • Please email Carol directly - [email protected] - if you have not already and would like her to add you to the list for Decobob or crushed walnut by FRIDAY, 24th January.  Details are in the requirements list below.  Carol can also add microtex needles to the Decobob thread order if you don't have any Microtex they are on the Wonderfil website too, £5.60 for a pack of microtex needles.

Key fob

Materials needed for Key Fob
  • Sufficient fabric to complete the project.
  • Four 1” x 30” strips of co-ordinating colour
  • Piece fabric for backing 1¾ “ x 9”
  • Wadding 1” x 9”
  • 1” metal key fob (Carol will supply for free)
  • Size 70/10 or 80/12 microtex needle or 75/11 quilting needle
  • Thread – 80Wt Decobob recommended, can order through Carol, will split postage
https://wonderfil.co.uk/collections/decobob-80wt-2ply-cottonized-polyester

Please let Carol know as soon as possible, and before Friday 24th, if you want a 250m spool (£5.40) or 2000m spool (£12) and which colour, please give an alternative colour in case they are out of stock.  I would recommend a grey (DB103) or neutral taupe (DB115) depends on what colour you like piecing with.  Email [email protected]
You will struggle with Aurifil, especially with this project, it’s too thick.  You may get away with it if you make the pincushion.

The blue key fob above was a project done by Region 11  Quilters Guild a few years ago, the rainbow version is Carol’s work in progress to show other options.

[email protected] for any questions or to order Decobob or walnut stuffing.

Goosey Pincushion

Download the free pattern here: https://payhip.com/jeliquiltspatterns/collection/all
Materials needed for Goosey pincushion
  • Geese – (6) fabric scraps at least 1.5” x 3”
  • Background
    • (12) 1.5” squares for template sections
    • (2) 1.25” x 4” strips
    • (2) 1.25” x 4.5” strips
  • Backing - (1) 3.5” x 5.5” strip
  • Wadding – (1) 4.5” x 6.5” strip

Let Carol know if you want crushed walnuts and she will bulk buy a bag of it.  There will be a small charge of approx £2.50/kg and this will be split into smaller quantities for £1.30/500g if more than 6 people want it.  Carol does want to be left with 5kg of it! Quilt shops charge £5+ for 500g
Carol’s work in progress, still needs some stuffing!
