My Heart's in the Garden Quilt by Sharon Coates
This quilt started as my "President's Challenge" in July 2013. I wanted to do a challenge that was a little different from the usual blocks that are frequently used. I love doing stitchery's and find it very relaxing. I also like to see the picture come to life as you stitch. It is good to sit in the garden in the summer stitching instead of sitting indoors at your sewing machine. It is also something that you can take on holiday with you. Myself and Sally Byrne spent many weeks browsing through books and magazines to find suitable pictures for each block. After selecting 30 suitable pictures we used a light box to transfer the images on to calico. These were then given out together with instructions for each member to complete the block with any embroidery stitches and colours they chose. Once the blocks were all completed and returned to me there was the task of working out how they went together, and what fabric to buy to go with all the blocks. I could not use all the blocks in the quilt so I made cushions, shopping bags, and small wall hangings as extra prizes. (see pictures below). As you can see a lovely quilt has been produced from all the members of Malvern Quilters, and we hope that it will raise a lot of money for our chosen charity: Worcester Breast Cancer Support Group.
"It was my pleasure to accompany Sharon Coates to the Worcester Breast Cancer Support Group meeting, on Tuesday 9th June to present a cheque for £1300 raised by the Raffle held during the Exhibition in April this year. The group was Sharon’s chosen charity during her Presidency of Malvern Quilters. The group wished to convey their thanks to all concerned in raising the funds which were very happily received."
